A FEW THINGS BEFORE YOU START

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers for turning your own pictures into cross-stitch patterns, choosing settings, and keeping a copy of your work.

Getting started

Is Crosspic free, and do I need an account?

Creating, editing and exporting patterns is free, with no account required. Start with your own picture, draw on a blank chart, or open an editable sample from the free patterns.

What pictures can I use?

Choose a JPG, PNG or WebP smaller than 30 MB. A clear subject, good contrast and a simple background are easier to turn into a readable chart. Use a photo you took or artwork you have permission to use. See the photo-preparation checklist before importing.

Are my pictures uploaded to a server?

Image conversion runs on your device, and your working projects stay in this browser. Selecting a picture for the maker does not upload it to a Crosspic conversion server. Sharing a downloaded file is a separate action you choose. The website also uses Google services as described in the privacy policy.

Do I need to install software?

Crosspic runs in your web browser; there is no desktop application to install. Your saved projects belong to that browser on that device. Download editable backups if you want to keep them or move them elsewhere. See backup and restore help.

Making your design

Why does my converted picture lose small details?

Each chart cell becomes a stitch, so a tiny feature may occupy too few cells to stay recognizable. Crop closer to the subject, try a larger stitch grid, or compare a different color limit. More cells also mean more stitching. The worked examples show actual settings and the tradeoff between detail and thread colors.

What is the difference between chart size and fabric count?

Chart width and height count stitches. Fabric count sets how many stitches fit in an inch, so changing it changes the finished size without adding detail to the chart. A 140-stitch width is 10 inches at 14 count and 8.75 inches at 16 count. Use the fabric calculator to include your cutting allowance.

Will my pattern use exactly the color limit I choose?

The limit is a maximum, not a promise of that many colors. Similar image shades can map to the same DMC reference, so the actual palette may be smaller. Review the preview and thread key, then refine colors in the editor. Screen colors are approximations; compare physical floss before buying. See the palette guide.

Can I make a name or message into a pattern?

Yes. The lettering generator makes actual charts from one 5 × 7 block alphabet. It supports A–Z, numbers, spaces and the punctuation listed in the tool; lowercase becomes uppercase. You can set scale, gaps and alignment, then edit or export the chart. It does not generate cursive or accented letters or load your own fonts.

Printing and keeping your work

What files can I download?

Export a PDF booklet for stitching, a PNG preview or chart image, and a .crosspic file for an editable backup. PDF and PNG downloads do not replace your editable project. Open your pattern in the editor and choose Export; the export reference explains the options.

How do I print a chart I can read?

Choose the paper size and a color, symbol or combined chart, then generate the PDF preview. Check the thread key, grid and page map before downloading. Larger charts can span multiple pages; stitch any repeated overlap only once. The printing guide walks through these checks.

Where are my saved patterns, and can I lose them?

Open My saved patterns in the same browser and device. Projects are saved in browser storage, which can be cleared by privacy settings, private browsing or removing website data. Crosspic does not provide account-based cloud sync. Keep a downloaded .crosspic backup of work you want to preserve.

How do I move an editable pattern to another device?

Download the .crosspic project from the editor or export page, transfer the file yourself, then import it from the pattern library in the other browser. A PDF, PNG or renamed image is not an editable project. See backup and restore instructions if you need help.
