Pattern details and finished size

These specifications come from the supplied PDF. This is a full-coverage pattern: the green background is stitched, not blank fabric. All 100 x 100 squares are included in the stitch count.

Detail Pattern specification
Chart size 100 x 100 stitches
Total stitches 10,000 full cross stitches, including the background
Palette 10 colors; thread numbers and symbols are listed in the PDF key
Backstitch None
Suggested fabric 14-count Aida
Thread setting 2 strands
Finished size on 14-count Aida About 7.1 x 7.1 inches / 18.1 x 18.1 cm
Suggested fabric cut in the PDF About 13.1 x 13.1 inches / 33.4 x 33.4 cm

For the finished width, divide 100 stitches by 14 squares per inch: 100 / 14 = approximately 7.14 inches. The height is the same. The suggested fabric cut adds 3 inches on each side for handling and finishing; that extra fabric is outside the stitched square.

Compare the puppy chart previews

The stitch preview above shows the design as crosses. The color-only preview below makes the puppy's outline, tan shading and green background easier to compare.

The combined preview shows both colors and symbols. Use the PDF key to match each symbol to its thread entry rather than selecting floss from screen color alone.

The black-and-white preview removes the colored fills while keeping the symbols. The diamond symbols surrounding the puppy represent background stitches; they do not mark empty squares.

These images are previews. Use the numbered PDF chart pages and their key together when stitching. If symbols are new to you, read how to read a cross stitch chart.

What is inside the free PDF?

The eight-page file contains a cover, a pattern preview, a project guide, four numbered chart pages and a floss-and-symbol key. The source file uses the project name "images" in its headings; it contains the puppy shown here.

The chart is arranged across two columns and two rows of pages:

Chart page Columns Rows
1 1–59 1–81
2 57–100 1–81
3 1–59 79–100
4 57–100 79–100

Adjacent pages repeat three stitches. Stitch each overlap only once. For example, columns 57–59 appear on both upper chart pages. Match the row and column ranges before continuing onto the next page, and use the small page map to locate the neighboring section.

Save the PDF and print one chart page first to check that you can distinguish the symbols. Keep the final key page nearby. Our pattern-printing guide explains what to check before printing the whole chart.

Is this puppy pattern suitable for beginners?

The pattern uses full cross stitches with no backstitch, but 10,000 stitches make it a substantial project. Large background areas need fewer color changes, while the eyes, mouth, ear edges and shading need closer counting. Ten colors and a friendly subject do not make it a quick first project.

If you are choosing your first chart, use the beginner pattern checklist to assess the workload. Work in manageable areas, mark completed stitches and check your position against the ten-square grid lines before changing colors.

Can I leave the green background unstitched?

You can choose to stitch only the puppy on fabric you like, but that changes the supplied full-coverage design. The PDF's 10,000-stitch total and floss estimates include the background. Keep following the puppy's symbols carefully, and do not treat every green shade as background: green details also appear in the design.

How should I choose the floss?

Use the symbols and thread numbers printed on the PDF's final page. Compare the listed shades with physical floss or a thread card before buying; screen colors are only a guide. The file's floss estimates include 15% extra, and your actual usage will depend on how you stitch and carry thread.
